What a joyous day! I'm watching Alberto Gonzales resign right now to "be with his family." He and Rove will have lots of quality time together!
Congratulations on your work, your efforts, your signatures. When we all started the campaign to impeach Gonzales it seemed a far and distant possibility. But we learn, once again, that taking the lead, taking the initiative, and using our tools with the new media can have an impact. Nothing like seeing a clip of his lies spread around to hundreds of thousands!
So enjoy, celebrate, and look forward to more battles and victories ahead.

There is an excellent article by Matt Taibbi in the Sept. 6, 2007 issue of "Rolling Stone" (pg. #62 on ~) entitled 'The GREAT IRAQ SWINDLE'. It is absolutely astonishing what the current gangsters are "getting away (?)" with. Seems that the invasion is not of Iraq so much as it is of the U.S Treasury. AND IT IS CONTINUING !!
"Impeachment may well be the only remedy". And, if ANYONE is truly deserving of impeachment it is Richard 'Dick' Cheney.
It is a heavy wieght that is lift from the DOJ and the American people with the resignation of Alberto Gonzales.
For me it is not over and the DOJ investigations of Alberto to Rove needs to finish getting to the ends truth. Even though they resign and leave, might give ease of future wrong doings continuing. maybe not in America's face every day provides a low profile in hopes of no pursuit. There needs to be a conclusive end if there was laws broken that demand accountability. With that accountability applied as a consequence for illegal behavior. Only this will bring this mess to a full conclusion. For now I only feel partially contend and satified with Alberto finally discharged from doing even more damage.
I have to ask "Where is the outrage in Congress?" especially among the Republicans? These guys are doing more to harm the Republican party than anyone but until what's left of ethical Republicans join the ranks of the disillusioned and have the balls to stand up for the Constitution like they did with Nixon, this thing is DOA. Also, the "nuke Iran" loonies have to be rooted out QUICKLY before the US becomes the most hated "superpower" on the planet and the rest of the world pulls the final plug on what's left of our economy!
The square has four sides, two are gone, we have to work on the other two.
Don't be too happy. The fact Gonzales has left is meaningless. He'll be replaced with another criminal. Gonzales, Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al. have committed treason by insisting they are above the law. They have shattered the rule of law. Without the rule of law our rights as Americans are nothing more than ideas. Without the rule of law there is tyranny and there is no America. Gonzales will get a lucrative job with a "think" tank or as a lobbyist. IMPEACHMENT OF THE CRIMINALS IN CHARGE IS THE ONLY ANSWER. WE MUST STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF THE CONSTITUTION.
Someone took umbrage at my "impeach Cheney/Bush admin" (waste of time, no point), but did make an interesting point I'd not thought about, namely:
What about sessioning Cheney & Bush and Condiments directly off to the Hague (do not pass go, do not collect impeachment dollars)?
While we haven't signed up to support the "New World Order/One World Court," what about the Hague War Crimes Tribunal?
Don't let these worms off the hook! ..We have to get them to open their can of worms, before we throw them to the sharks!
That is the only way that we can see all those other squirming worms and all their wormy deeds, brought to the light of day!
Now lets focus on Cheney!
Geo.W. is dillusional if he thinks Gonzales is a man of honor. Cheny is conspicuously quiet about Alberto's leaving. He may have had something to do with it.
AMEN.
Now just who do you think in Congress will have the gumption to do just that? They are all too worried about who the next President will be or their own re-election to get anything done in the next 15 or so months.
Its time we took a serious look at just who we send to Congress and turn out every single one who is there to line their pockets and not help the people of this country as a whole (and not just a few select people and corporations)
LET'S NOT LET THIS RESIGNATION GO TO OUR HEADS: It does represent one small positive step; but at this urgent time of unprecedented corruption in our Executive Branch, it is *only* the BEGINNING: Let us not lose sight of our true goal, which must be to have every guilty member of this lawless Administration completely and immediately *deterred* from digging our nation into any deeper of a hole than they have already dug; and to see to it that every one of these crooks is brought to justice for what he has already done. Just because Rove and Gonzales are leaving Washington is, I *guarantee* you, no reason just yet to break out the champagne. ALL OF THESE OFFICIALS MUST ANSWER for the constitutional crimes and Geneva Convention violations they have committed (and, at least in Rove's case, will continue to commit).
Experience has shown that this White House does *nothing* that it does not expect to yield it some sort of advantage. We must make CERTAIN that that does not happen: Senator Leahy, Reps. Conyers and Waxman, et al., must press forward with their investigations even more circumspectly and with even greater perseverance than before; and *crucially*, the new appointee to fill Gonzales' post must *NOT* be another Bush rubber-stamp, but must credibly pledge him- or herself up front (whether Bush balks at such a stipulation or not) to full cooperation in a truly impressive number of long-overdue investigations and prosecutions. This situation has become so dire, and this Administration so predictably cynical, that Congress needs to threaten in advance that truly *extraordinary* measures will be taken to unseat any Bush-friendly Recess Appointment and to obtain, at this unprecedented moment of Constitutional Crisis, an Attorney General who will impartially enforce the Law, even against his or her own bosses -- OR WE'LL HAVE GAINED NOTHING: RATHER, UNLESS WE MAKE SURE THIS HAPPENS, *ALL* WILL BE *LOST*.
NOW IS THE TIME to enumerate carefully the *extremely* long list of offenses for which Messrs. Gonzales, Rove, Cheney and Bush MUST ANSWER -- going over the heads, if necessary, of spineless congressional leaders like Nancy "off the table" Pelosi -- lest a permanent precedent become established which tolerates absolute corruption in our country's highest offices. No matter how slippery the various members of Team Bush have succeeded at being to date, Congress needs to take whatever steps may be necessary in order to outwit them: They must designate a hard-hitting Special Prosecutor; lay out a plan for CAREFUL, ONE-AT-A-TIME, PER-OFFENSE prosecutions of Mr. Gonzales -- conducted in parallel with Congress' ongoing legislative program -- which are assured to keep him under the proverbial gun until long *after* Bush and Cheney have left office, and no one is left to pardon him (with fresh, closely-guarded Back-Up Charges ready to file, in the event of any more preemptive pardons or commutations; in fact, the point needs to be made *in* *advance* that any such interference on Bush's part will be considered actionable Obstruction of Justice...); and then Gonzales must either face the music, one-at-a-time, for each and every of his myriad offenses, *or* he must agree to turn state's evidence against his bosses.
The 3rd blind mouse to abandon the sinking ship! Now let's get going on finishing this so-called administration and take back our country and Constitution!
This msg is for Ben who wanted to know why there was such an uproar in the firings of 9 US AG. YOu need to listen to NPR / public radio.
The reason alot of people are upset is US atty are hired to do the will of the people. Yes they are appointed by the President but they until Bush got into the act have been allowed to do thier jobs without parisan politics. US attys have the ability to choice to prosecute people on a wide variety of situations.
Usually US attys resign when a new President comes into office. That is tradition. They are not removed during the term unless they are indicted for doing thigns they shouldnt be doing. If they chose to leave during the adminstration; that is one thing. These 9 were fired as they refused to play politics like going after Dems (NM) in a hot election; to make way for cronies of Bush (AR); because they failed to be "good republicans (forgot the term) according to Bush ; because they went after corrupt GOP politicans (CA) etc. This hasnt happened before. The US atty needs to be above politics and independent in order to do his / her job.
Then when calls were made to certain Senators on the Judical committee; hearings were held in which Gonzales replied I Dont Know; many times; didnt know what was going on in his office, etc.
The entire DOJ has been made to play partisan politics; to stop DOJ from doing its job in civil rights ; voting rights and many other areas. Political appointees are making the decisions that used to be made by career attornies. Attys were hired becasue they were loyal republicans with very little experience in civil rights or other issues handled by DOJ.
Hope this helps.
The pot is boiling. Let's keep stirring.
B. Rosencrance
We should hunt the BİG game who made Bush and Gonzales and the whole lot of them possible. The Republican Congress WHO RUBBER STAMPED EVERY MOVE GONZALES Bush Rummy Cheney and the rest made.
We have got to brand this Republican Party for what they made possible.
Sons
BUSH
says gonzales was brought down by dragging this honorable mans name through the mud, am i missing something here, seems to me george and his cohorts drug him through the mud. he is just one of many getting caught, and to assert that he was an honoable man would imply that george bush was an honorable man.to bad we can't ask the million plus that have died because of his lies about how honorable he is
Another one bites the dust...
Yea!
Enough celebrating, time to finish the job.
We must impeach the last of the "whitehouse mafia" and reclaim our country.
Destroy the "patriot act" and reclaim our civil rights.
Great job all, now lets finish this up.
Sic transit gloria. The man was a shameful yes man who adhered not the oath he took to uphold the Constitution of the United States. My fear is that he will, as is proper for a former toady, bask in his silence, and never be held to tell the truth.
Bravo to you Robert Greenwald!
You did a stellar job in helping to bring down one of the Bush thugs. And thats more than I can say for my party (the Democrats) who voted as a majority to EXPAND the NSA illegal spying powers of Bush/Chendy and (then) Attorney General Gonzales just a few weeks ago. The Dems broke my heart and betrayed the people, but I salute true patriots like you who work their tails off to bring down the bullies and destroyers of Democracy.
My hat is off to you...
Most Sincerely,
Kelly Taylor (Ms.)

Well, I've heard of the Domino Theory. I think it's working! It's a happy day today.
He resigned but damage is done. Allowing Tortures. Warrantless spying and Patriot Act. We need to have these law abolished, then we will be free once again.
soooo happy to see this nincompoop depart!! BUT--my disappointment at the swift & nimble departure of Bush's BRAIN without having to answer for any of his high crimes & evil machinations is a very, very bitter pill to swallow. o well, "W" would have pardoned Karl Rove regardless..keep up the fight & just maybe , those doing the crimes will do their times if justice prevails.keep on keepin'on, y'all
First of all, I'm a liberal. I understand why Gonzales is being impeached, after all he lied in front of congress. But, why were the firings a big deal?? Someone please explain this to me. As far as I can tell, EVERY president fires US attorneys for political reasons. I think it's completely wrong, but why are we all of a sudden getting worked up about it? Someone tell me what's different about this instance.....please, I can't find this info anywhere on the web.
Most of the Bush administration needs to be in a federal prison serving time for violating the public trust and their sacred oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, a document once referred to as "quaint" by the former attorney general.
This wasn't a big surprise. What took him so long? Rove resigning, was a surprise though. I think a lot more is going to come out soon on Roves direct involvement, and Gonzales help in doing it. Making both look bad, and their acts appearing illegal. I hope this isn't the end of the investigation. Ignoring Subpoenas, citing Executive Privilege.... We know little of the big picture with all the White House Stone Walling that's been going on. Jeff Morris-Saugerties NY- DeJaVu57
One by one, the rats abandon the sinking ship! Rumsfeld was thrown under the bus first. Sampson, Goodling, Bartlett, Rove, Gonzales... On deck...Cheney?...We can dream, right? Gonzales should be recorded as possibly the worst Atty Gen the U.S. has ever had. He even tops the convicted John Mitchell from the old Nixon Gang. The Architect of Torture policies, Torture memo, NSA warrant less spying program, Political Firings of the nine Federal Prosecutors, Politicizing the DOJ. He was also a big player in the formation and rules of Guantanamo Bay, the suspension of Habeas Corpus. He lied to Congress under oath concerning the Prosecutor Firings. He smirked and couldn't recall seventy four times. He lied under oath to the Senate Gang of Eight concerning the NSA spying program. Then there's that visit to the hospital scene right out of "The Godfather, where he tries to coerce then Atty Gen Ashcroft to sign off on his illegal NSA spying program. Even a heavily sedated Ashcroft refused from his hospital bed! Gonzo is now Gone-Zo. My only question is, what took you so long? Jeff Morris-Saugerties NY- DeJaVu57
My daughter will have something to REALLY celebrate on her birthday, September 17. It could be a greater celebration only if Gonzales resigned on my grandson's birthday, September 2.
Thank you Robert Greenwald, for short takes that made a difference.
I hope this sees a surge in citizen power, for our Constitution is still in peril, AND people are still being tortured.
For justice's sake, impeachment, indictment, imprisonment are still in order. These are no small crimes.
Congratulations, Brave New Films!
"Impeach Gonzales" campaign has been very inspiring to me along with the other campaigns you've been running. And to see the result like this!! I have more belief in people's power now. Thank you!
I suspect everything they do. Therefore, I suspect that he fell on his sword for Bush. I want to see the investigations continue. What made Rove leave suddenly, followed by Gonzo? Trying to smear the trail maybe? Call me crazy, but they never seem to do anything without one foot in brimstone. Follow the motive.
Senator Lautenberg was nice enough to respond to my impeachment of the President "Select"[courtesy of the Not So Supreme Court] and V.P.Cheney guestion. He reminded me that the House of Representatives are the ONLY ones with the power to introduce an impeachment.I propose that we Oust all Democrats in the House who refuse to file formal charges against the Pesident and Vice President.Maybe it's time we start a grassroots,American people powered petition to do it.The House members are too busy redecorating their offices or taking lobbyist paid junkets or worrying about pork barrel projects.
going? going? fianally,gone-zales....If rove was bush"s brain, what ansatomical part might we ass-ign to the newly departed, but unfortunatley, not forgotten ag? is there such a thing as a brain transplant? too bad we cant subsitute a wisbone for a backbone--the first recipient would be harry reid!
Good riddance Alberto! What took you so long to resign? Bush finally have some sense in himself.
“It’s sad,” Mr. Bush said, asserting that Mr. Gonzales’s name had been “dragged through the mud for political reasons.”
Yer dang right - for politicizing the firing of those Judges!! Shoulda impeached the rascal before he jumped ship! I bet he'd look real cute in orange.
It is well established that Rove left the administration early enough to write a book bastardizing the Clintons to be timed right before the elections(Swift boating). Gonzales may be doing the same thing even though they both said they left"to spend more time with their families"Lies,Lies and MORE lies.
I just hope Congress doesn't let them(including Bush & Cheney) get away with their crimes!!! They All should be indicted, convicted and imprisoned!
We must not forget to pursue the crimes Gonzales has perhaps commited, and charge him with what the law determines these crimes to be. Unless this is done, others will continue to commit such crimes. I suspect he deserves to be jailed.
I wonder if this might be the scenario: Gonzo is clearly not up to the upcoming battles over "executive privilege" and Cheney convinced Bush to push Gonzo out for someone stronger for this fight. Glad to see Gonzo go-go but not hopeful that this sickening administration will put forth someone whose interest is justice for all not politics.
Another winged monkey falls from the sky. Time to melt the WWW.
While I understand the call for caution or reserve regarding the import of Gonzales' resignation, can't we just savor the moment?..just for now...victory is sweet. We can start again tomorrow to rid our government of its worst people. Hallelujah and thanks to everyone on this site for all of your hard work.
Now let's go for the real problem. George W.Bush. Are we to only go after the ones that take their lead from their leader? is he above the law? Yoiu tell me, so that I will know just who I am fighting with and against.
Callie Greer
I am so glad that Gonzo will be gone from this dreadful administration. I was happy to see that "Bush's Brain," Rove, also left. NOW, folks let's see if Cheney and Bush will ALSO resign, or be impeached! What a flippin' disaster this entire past six and a half years has been. Can we bring this country back to "normal?" Yes, it has been done before and it CAN be done again!
Gonzalez served at the pleasure of the president. Did that mean he had to jerk him off too?
GO GO GOne GOnzo!
I did not think anyone could be worse than Ashcroft. Bush slit my ballsack and inserted Gonzalez. Yes, I have lived with things twisted.I have the feeling he is now focused on my anus with chertoff.
What's so telling is how Gonzo lied right up to the very end about not resigning.
This guy is a criminal, but he's just a fall guy for the real pigs. This resignation was orchestrated months ago, and is just a bone the White House is tossing to the public dogs to shut us up and give us the illusion of victory. Be on guard against a "constitutional crisis" or some other trumped up reason to declare martial law and suspend the elections in 2008. Gonzales did his job; the fix is in. He's gone, but the courts are now packed with the pro-fascist judges he gave to the Administration. Here's to the new boss ... same as the old boss.
Ding dong the witch is dead, but she has so many ugly sisters.
Alberto the torture boy was to GWbush what the dog handlers were to Michael Vick.
We the pit bulls celebrate.
For that matter, what makes us think, come tomorrow, Gonzales will REMEMBER he resigned today?
